Compatible printer ink, also known as compatible toner, is ink manufactured by a company that operates separately from the brand name company who manufactured the original printer, and is designed to work in specific printers. Note that the production of this ink does not infringe on the patents of printing manufacturers. Compatible inks and toners come in a variety of packaging styles and materials, but tegardless of their packaging, compatible inks are consistently sold at a lower price than original equipment manufacturer (OEM) brand inks and toners. Despite the ongoing recent intellectual property debate and litigation involving the patents of printer manufacturers, third party manufacturers continue to thrive with increasing sales and market share.

Compatible printer ink is manufactured for several types of printing machines including and fucntions including faxing, laser printing, multifunction printers, and photocopying documents. Aside from compatible ink, there are three other sources of products that compete on the market today. These include OEM brand ink and toner, remanufactured toner and ink cartridges, and refilled ink and toner cartridges. Compatible ink manufacturers set their product apart from the others by using all new products and offering a much lower price. Other ink replacement methods recycle used OEM parts to lower costs and allow the price reduction while still gaining a profit.

Part of the debate surrounding the benefits of using compatible ink and toner involves the quality of the products being sold to consumers. Third party manufacturers defend the quality of their products wholeheartedly, and independent testing has consistently supported their claims of offering a good quality product. These tests have shown little or no difference in printing quality between compatible ink and OEM products. Those who are against compatible ink, however, claim that the colors in compatible ink (particularly yellow) are not as bright or vibrant as those in genuine OEM ink. They also suggest that color prints done with compatible ink are less durable than OEM ink and toners and more prone to fading over time. It is true that in the past, the quality of finished printed products made using compatible ink was not up to par in comparison to the products of OEM printing ink, but recent advances in technology and commitment to excellence in the compatible ink cartrdige industry have ensured that this sacrifice in quality is no longer an issue. The opinion that comptible ink cartridges result in a significant reduction in quality has not been substantiated in recent testing or trials.

If you do decide to begin using compatible printer ink, there are a few things to keep in mind as you being shopping for these products. First, your printer’s warranty will not become invalid if you choose to use compatible ink cartridges. These compatible cartridges often come with their own warranty guarantee, increasing customers’ piece of mind and confidence in the product. As long as you do extensive research on a vendor before committing to a purchase, you can rest assured that you are receiving a goo quality product.
