More and more people have discovered the advantages of working at home. People who work at home enjoy more time with their family, eliminate the need for long commutes, and enjoy less stressful environments. Gone were the days when you need to physically be inside a four-walled office to do your job, now you can do so at the comforts of your home.

The challenge for people who work from home is to create an environment conducive to working. The space must be one that brings out productivity and encourages creativity.

So how do you decorate your home office? What furniture should you use? The furniture you use for your home office and the design you have in your space can impact your productivity.

The first thing to mull over is the amount of work you do. With this in mind, you can then determine the complexity of the home office you need. After that, consider these five points:

Work space

Have a work space that can accommodate your computer, paperwork and other equipment needed for work. Your desk mustn’t be too cramped up where you are restricted to one position. Getting office workstations for home offices is one option. These are perfect for your work space. If you have a team who regularly comes to your home office for brainstorming sessions or meetings, getting boardroom furniture is another option.

Seating

As you spend hours and hours of each day working, you need comfortable seating in your home office. You need to invest in good office furniture that allows you to sit comfortably for longer periods. In choosing a chair, you need to pick one with a good back support and has the proper height for you. You can also get height adjustable chairs.

Storage

The most ideal office space would enable you to easily reach for things you need for work. If you need to spend a good 15 minutes to search for a document, you need to rethink your home office’s storage system. If you need to regularly get up from your chair and visit the next room for office equipment you need to use, it’s time to reorganise your office space. One important factor that aids to productivity is organisation. Once you have your things organised, it’s easier for you to look for things you need. It’ll also allow you to function efficiently. A well organised work space would give you an uncluttered mind.

Filing cabinets are the usual options for storage. If you want to shy away from the traditional office look, you can use containers placed on shelves or nightstands with drawers. To save on space you can also use cabinets with sliding doors for your storage. You can easily tuck in your office supplies and equipment inside to make the space tidy.

Lighting

Your work space should be well-lit and you should prevent or minimise glare. Glare is one of the common causes for eye fatigue. To achieve this you can strategically position your monitor where it won’t reflect the light from windows or other light sources.

For your lighting you should combine task lighting with ambient lighting. This means you need to have a direct light like a lamp and there needs to have general illumination in the room, like recessed or tracked lights. It is essential to also combine natural and artificial lighting in your space.

Design

In designing your home office you should incorporate your own style and make it feel like home. You can do this by including photographs, paintings, sculptures or art pieces into the space. You can also use vibrant colours in your furniture selection. This will create a fresh work zone.

The good thing about having your office in your home is you can do whatever you want with it. You need to be careful though not to make your home office too comfortable. If this happens, you risk suppressing productivity and limiting creativity. To create a bit of a corporate look you can incorporate the same style and finish in a few of the pieces in the room.

Striking a balance between comfort and functionality is essential. But as long as you carefully consider these five points mentioned, you can fully enjoy the comfort, convenience and benefits of working at home.
