I recently started doing interior decoration as a hobby and cannot begin to tell you how much I have learned over the past couple of months just through having certain guidelines combined with a whole lot of trial and error. Some of my friends are top interior decorators and taught me some really valuable lessons such as constantly brainstorming and experimenting with various techniques, which is the best way to improve your overall vision and approach to designing. Every month that goes by I improve on my ability to visualise what certain rooms should look it which is one of the most important skills to have as an interior decorator.

Recently I just moved over to New York City, where I found a basement apartment that wasn’t exactly beautiful but it had loads of potential. The problem with basements is that they are by far the most difficult rooms to decorate correctly as they are normally very dark, gloomy and damp. Adding the right colours and complimenting it with some indoor pot plants is a really great idea for giving some life to your basement. Sometimes people will use basements in their houses as recording studios, offices or bedrooms. No matter what it is used for always make sure you brighten it up and try making it as visually appealing as possible.

When I was staying at my old house I used to work from home, so obviously had a separate room that was used as my home office. I did some research recently on the various effects different colours can have on your office environment, and managed to find some really interesting stuff that will make you think about what colour to use in your home office. There are certain colours that will take away from your overall productivity because they are very distracting yet we also get some colours that increase ones productivity, concentration and motivation. Blues are very calming colour, yellow is cheerful and red promotes excitement. Green is the most rejuvenating and restful colour which I personally think is great for home offices.

I recently travelled to Cape Town where I bought some really beautiful curtains and a wide range of pillows to complement them. Having good quality and well-designed curtains can really make a huge difference to the look and feel of your room. Pillows are probably my favourite item for decorating lounges. They can be placed on different pieces of furniture and they have the ability to make certain items centre pieces provided you have bought eye catching pillows.

Interior design can also mean bringing the outdoors in, so consider
adding some plants to your new room. An umbrella plant in a corner can
do wonders to brighten a place up and bring life into a room. Plants
give off oxygen which is a nice benefit that interior design takes into
account when including houseplants. This extra oxygen is said to
    rejuvenate the inhabitants.
