LEDs Indoors

LED lights, short for light-emitting diodes, are no longer the sole domain of street lights, digital displays and lamps. They’re becoming a stylish part of interior design as well. Over the years, LEDs have been developed so that they can emit light from across the spectrum, and not just the red glow of days gone by.

Indeed, LEDs have become increasingly popular due to their low energy consumption, small size, durability and longer lifespan. Let’s take a look at some of their indoor applications.

LED Wallpaper

• London-based design firm, Meystyle, recently unveiled their LED wallpaper containing Swarovski crystals at New York Design Week. According to the two sisters behind the design label, the aforementioned crystals “Accentuate the impact of the LEDs as the two work in harmony to create a dramatic impact”. The wallpaper range also takes the environment into consideration. The designs, lights and crystals are embedded directly into the paper substrate. Furthermore, the LEDs in the wallpaper have a lifespan of over 50 000 hours.

• Electronics brand Phillips, meanwhile, recently released their version of LED wall coverings. The wall panels come in a range of colours, and are aimed primarily at hotels, restaurants and retail spaces. They have a dual purpose of providing illumination and acting as an aesthetically pleasing decor item. The ambient wall panels can also be integrated with an audio system, which is particularly useful for corporate, retail or event spaces.

• Meanwhile, interior designer Ingo Maurer created an LED wallpaper with a circuit board embedded amongst the geometric shapes in his design. In addition, homeowners can customise the colours and design to their liking. “The LED wallpaper offers very thrilling possibilities to illuminate rooms: dimmed, enigmatic light hardly revealing where the shine is coming from or an urban vibrating atmosphere,” says Maurer.

LED Furniture

LED lights have also been integrated into various items of furniture to provide you with colourful ambient lighting that will impress guests and make quite the style statement. They have been incorporated into couches, single chairs, patio seating, side tables, furniture cubes and small stools. Furthermore, icebuckets and bar counters have also received the same treatment.

LEDs can also be incorporated into your plumbing. Purchase showerheads and taps with colourful LEDs installed, and clean yourself in what appears to be liquid rainbow. You won’t want to get out again!

If you’re really a fan of light-emitting diodes, there are all sorts of indoor products to satisfy your craving. LED cereal bowls are just one of them. You can also invest in all sorts of glowing LED lights – from rainbow strings to ambient orbs and wall signage. And if you want to wear some LEDs? Then you’d best get yourself a pair of trainers or high heels kitted out with the diodes. They really do exist.

So, if you’re in the mood for a remodel, or simply wanted to brighten up your life (ha!), then consider incorporating some LEDs into your design. Just imagine basking in the gentle glow of your ice bucket, as you gracefully recline on your LED seat with a shimmering wine glass in one hand…Convinced yet?
