Summer Inspired Home Decorating

Summer is my favorite season. When the weather starts to warm, I’m eager to start spending time outside gardening, barbecuing, and sunbathing. But not all summer fun has to take place outdoors. I also love to freshen up my décor to create a bright, summery atmosphere inside. Here are some simple tricks I use to bring the beauty of the season into my home.

Swap Accessories In the fall and winter, I am drawn to warm, dark colors. But when summer arrives, I’m ready for a change. I swap out my dark red accent pillows for summery yellow and green ones. Ditto for my tablecloths and place settings. I also pack away the plush throws that I don’t need in hot weather and swap them out for a few lightweight, summery ones. It’s amazing how much brighter my home looks with a few summer accessories.

De-Clutter I pack away all of the coats, boots, and scarves that clutter our entryway. We just don’t need them in the summer, so why keep them handy? Our coat rack is perfect for hanging beach bags and towels.

Create Fresh, No-Fuss Decorations Since so much of my enjoyment of summer comes from being outside, I try to bring the outdoors indoors as much as possible. Glass bowls, jars, and vases are perfect for displaying summery decorations. Simple mason jars hold shells and sea glass or freshly cut flowers from my garden. A display of potted herbs adds function and style to my kitchen. A bowl of fresh, seasonal fruit makes the perfect summer centerpiece.

Rotate Bedding In the colder months, we use flannel sheets and thick quilt. (I love my quilt! My mother made it for me.) But there’s no need for all that heavy bedding in the summer. I switch out the flannel sheets for crisp white cotton ones. The quilt gets lovingly stored away and temporarily replaced with a thin bedspread.

Update Window Treatments The warm weather and long days of summer make it the ideal season for completing overdue home improvement projects. My husband and I had been meaning to update our window treatments for a few years. Since I am a huge fan of summer décor, I wanted to get rid of our heavy, dark curtains. Our old blinds were also falling apart, and they definitely lacked style.

Updated window treatments are like a makeover for your home! Don’t underestimate what a big difference they make. Our rooms look brighter, bigger, and somehow even cleaner than they did before! If we had known how easy it is to install new blinds and shades, we wouldn’t have put it off for so long. The best part of our new window treatments is that the crisp, neutral colors we chose will look sharp in every season.

In preparing my home for the changes from winter to spring and summer, I knew my family needed to update our window treatments and give our rooms a fresh, new appearance. In my search for quality window treatments in Houston, Texas, I found a company that offers a free in-home window covering consultation with one of their talented designers. All I had to do was give them a call.
