Coffee tables are one of the most frequently overlooked living room furnishings in terms of decorating. When you are busy choosing color palettes and furniture arrangements, it’s easy to forget about something as simple as the coffee table. However, this simple furnishing will play a critical role in the overall decor and style of the living room. If it’s not done correctly, it will offer nothing in terms of aesthetics to the surrounding atmosphere.

Before we go into decorating techniques, let me first stress the importance of choosing the right coffee table for your living room. Coffee tables are typically placed in front of the couch where they are in open, plain view. Although they aren’t considered the primary focal point, they are still highly visible and will naturally have a direct impact on the decor. When choosing a coffee table, look for one with colors and elements that match the rest of your living room decor.

Tip #1 – Keep It Clean

Allowing your coffee table to accumulate dust, dirt and debris will only have a negative effect on your living room decor. Try to get into the habit of cleaning it on a regular basis to prevent this from happening. You don’t have to spend hours meticulously polishing it, but instead go over it with a lint-free microfiber cloth.

Do you toss your mail, car keys and remote controls on the coffee table without thinking twice? It might seem like the perfect location for these items, but tossing them here takes away from your home’s true beauty and style. A better solution is to find a permanent home for these items, such as a nearby desk drawer.

Tip #2 – Less Is More

Generally speaking, less is more when it comes to decorating a coffee table. Far too many people make the mistake of trying to fit in dozens of decorative accessories on their coffee table. In some cases this work, but nine out of ten times it’s a poor choice than ends up in a cluttered appearance. Following the “less is more” approach will make your decorating efforts easier and more effective.

Some excellent items to use on a coffee table include books, candles, glass vases and even small plants. Just remember to design you coffee table around a minimalistic theme to achieve an attractive appearance. After choosing a couple accessories, arrange them in a balanced manner so there’s not too much focus placed on one side.

Tip #3 – Complimenting Colors

No matter what accessories you decide to use on your coffee table, make sure they compliment surrounding colors and tones. For instance, you obviously wouldn’t want to decorate your coffee table using brown accessories if they rest of your living room was decorated in black. Brown and black are two colors that clash with one another. A better option is to use maroon or white-colored accessories on your coffee table if the living room is decorated in black.
