Quirky. That’s how my friends describe me. As a child my mother would tell me that I was wearing too many colors and to tone it down. As a teenager I had classmates rolling around with my quirky sense of humor.

There are people in life who are cookie-cutter types- traditional and highly predictable. And then there are people who are not. I was never cookie-cutter material- moved abroad alone at eighteen to a foreign country, enjoy wearing non-matching colors for the fun of it, love learning useless nuggets of information and also say things out loud that other people think constantly but would never say. It is therefore no surprise that now, styling my own house, I want my house to have those quirky touches that bring a smile to people’s faces. I went looking for some ideas online…

Practical doesn’t have to equal boring!

I’m a true believer in making the norm as unpredictable as possible. Something like mealtime at home should be fun. It doesn’t have to be a time of stuffing food into your mouth as fast as possible so as to get back to what you were doing. Rather, it is a wonderful opportunity in a crazy day to sit down and enjoy some quality time with family members. I love it when I go to people’s houses and spot some cute serving utensils that jazz up daily meals.

For example, I’ve seen salad spoons that have shoe shapes on the ends so it looks like someone’s taken a dive into your salad and salt and pepper shakers that are formed like two people hugging each other, with their eyes being the place where the salt or pepper comes out.

However, my favorite quirky utensil is, without a doubt, the fountain cup. Used frequently by religious Jews who often have large festive meals on their Sabbath, the cup stands on a raised base, and when one pours wine into it the wine cascades down out of little funnels into a number of cups that stand on the lower tier. The fountain never fails to impress guests and I just love the feeling of ceremony it adds to the table.

Not Essential but Irresistible

Then there are the things that are not essential but add a fantastic touch to the house. I’m speaking about the kind of objects that you never even knew you needed but once you seem them you can’t imagine yourself living without them. Examples that spring to mind are paperweights in cute shapes, original nutcrackers, funny book-ends, etc. These are the kind of objects that can be little but can add so much happiness to your home. If you are, like myself, the kind of person who likes it when people wander around your home and randomly burst into a smile because of a wonderful accessory that they laid eyes on then these kind of objects are for you…

Well, the list of fun objects for the house is truly endless but I do suggest taking a look online and also wandering around local home ware stores- there are many great inventions and reinventions coming out all the time and you can revamp your house simply and often inexpensively just by adding these little twists to your home…
