Bathroom upgrades can add a lot of value to a home. On the flip side, they can also cost an extreme amount of money. If you are interested in reaping the benefits of a bathroom remodel while on a tight budget, you should be pleased to know that you can pull off an impressive bathroom makeover without breaking the bank. It all comes down to working like a pro.
Draft a plan. Before you attempt any aspect of your renovation, you should sit down and draft a comprehensive plan for exactly what you want to accomplish, what methods you will use, and what supplies you will need. When you break the process down in such a way, you can more easily determine what can kind of resources you need to draw from, as well as how you can use your own strengths, in order to get the results you desire.
Paint like a pro. A fresh coat of paint is one of the most inexpensive things you can do to dramatically alter the look and feel of your bathroom space. However, getting professional results is not as simple as you might think. If you don’t time the time and effort to properly prep your space, you can make some very amateurish mistakes. You should expect that it will take you longer to prepare your paint area than it will to do the actual painting. What all does that entail? Before you even pick up a brush, you should cover the floor (and everything else that you don’t want any paint on) with tarp, and then tape-off the edges (where the walls meet the ceiling, counters, window sills, etc.) with painters tape.
Hire a handyman. As long as you have basic knowledge about what you want done and how you want it done, and you are willing to roll up your sleeves and dive into some dirty work, you can likely get away with hiring a handyman to do just the things that you aren’t equipped to do. For example, if you need an extra two arms for hanging drywall or moving a heavy bathtub, a handyman can be the help you need, and you won’t have to fork out the big bucks for a remodeling contractor.
Take classes at your local home improvement store. Retailers like Lowes and Home Depot want to make it easy for do-it-yourselfers to purchase their products and make good use of them. Going on the concept that customers who are happy with their home improvement project results will be customers who come back to purchase more supplies for new home improvement projects, these stores offer free how-to classes on site for an array of remodeling tasks, from laying tile to installing a new bathroom sink. If you want to get the most professional results possible from your DIY efforts, then taking these classes is a great way to see and experience, first-hand, how to go about doing it.
Getting professional results from your bathroom remodel doesn’t have to mean hiring a professional. However, it does mean working like a professional. These tips will help you do just that.
About the Author: Kyle Watts and his wife just remodeled their bathroom. They stuck to a tight budget so they could do some fun things as well, like adding a bidet seat (you can read reviews about them here), and an antique tub.
