Like most jobs, interior design has some interesting niches you can work in. Interior designers work in both commercial and residential buildings, coming up with ways to make unique and attractive rooms which are also practical and comfortable to be in. If you are considering going into interior design as a career, then you will probably at some point need to decide where you want to specialize. There are many niches, but here are some interesting ones you might want to consider:
Store Design
Designing the interiors of retail spaces can be a really cool area to work in, and of course, there are niches within this niche! You could work on large scale projects like department stores, or you could fit out exclusive luxury boutiques, specialist stores or supermarkets. Store design isn’t just about making sure the shop looks fantastic, but also about planning how to best display products and promotions, and using the psychology of how people shop to design things that encourage them to buy.
Home Interior Design
If what really appeals to you is making other people’s homes look beautiful, and working closely with home owners who are passionate about their projects, then home interior design is the niche for you. Of course, it is not only homeowners who need the services of designers – when apartment buildings and other residential properties are built designers are used to plan the look and feel of all of the units, working with the developers. Home interior design can take you to some interesting places, and at the top of the game you can end up working in some really luxurious properties. You may even get some celebrity clients!
Restaurant Design
A restaurant designer works to create the perfect ambiance, as well as a good practical layout, in restaurants of all types and sizes. Everything from a fast food joint through to a Michelin starred restaurant has to have its own specific look, and in addition to this, a kitchen designer has to work out the most practical and efficient layout for the behind the scenes areas where the chefs work their magic. Restaurant design can be a really great area to work in if you like to be really creative, because restaurant owners are always looking for something truly special that will give them an edge over the competition. Bear in mind though that you may be restricted by branding, for example in terms of the color palette the owners would like to have used. Similar to restaurant design, other areas of hospitality like bars, pubs and clubs also require designers, so if you are a party animal and want to create the look of the hottest new nightspot, this could be a great area for you!
Clinical Design
Hospitals, surgeries and niche clinics also need designers. Whether it is a top end private cosmetic surgeon’s office or a dental surgery, somebody is needed to decide how the area will look and where things will go. While in the past these places may have been cold and functional with little thought put into style, these days the top end clinics pay as much attention to the presentation of their clinics as salons and hotels do!
