Interior design is usually all about the here and now. What looks good, what is ‘in,’ and what design elements are the most sought after.
However, much like the world of fashion, people are so obsessed with what looks great now that they can easily take their eye off the ball and forget about what might come in the future. Of course, this is how these industries make their money, by getting you to invest in something now knowing that you’ll happily buy again once the trends change in a few months’ time.
The trick to getting ahead, therefore, is to know what’s coming in the months ahead. This is especially the case if you’re planning a home renovation before the end of 2013; you wouldn’t want to spend a lot of money on work only to find that what you’ve done looks outdated a month later.
Here are some forecasts of future interior design trends; keep these in mind when planning your own home improvements.
Neo Classical
If you’ve ever watched a comedy, or even a serious film or TV show, where the décor consists of little more than classical statue heads and ornaments, then you have an idea of where interior design is headed in 2014 and beyond.
This trend builds on those that we’re currently seeing in 2013, particularly those based on using the absence of color to create sprawling, all-white rooms that aren’t suitable for coffee or red wine drinkers.
If we’re being honest, our first thought was that this trend has the potential to be a “do you remember when?” horror that everyone looks back on with great humor and disdain. However, looking closer, there does seem to be potential for this look, although it will need to take over the whole room, rather than just be present here and there.
Function Over Fashion
It sounds awfully bland to think that functionality will lead us to a key interior design trend, but it is definitely going to happen.
As people spend less time at home and therefore have less time to maintain their home, living space will become more minimalistic and functional, rather than being filled with rugs, deep and comfortable chairs, and other elements of grand living.
Yes, they will still exist, but more emphasis will be on being able to get what you want quickly and easily. As a result, businesses like the Superglide wardrobe company can expect to see a surge in demand as people search for ease of living and greater convenience.
Man Caves
This trend has been bubbling under the surface for a while now, but is set to explode into 2014. The reason behind the prominence of man caves is that the modern man of today spends more time at home with his family and less time down the pub with his mates.
However, he does still need his area of retreat, and this trend is set to deliver it.
Shaping Your Home
Such is the nature of interior design that we’re always at different stages of our home improvements. Whatever trend you decide to embrace, whether it is in one room or across all of them, ensure that you put all of your efforts into creating the perfect home for your lifestyle and tastes.
